Gold Coast not = Brisbane... (May 31, 2009)

So… we hadn’t got much sleep… and things were a bit hectic towards the end. AND the print on our tickets read "Gold Coast (Brisbane)". But the Gold Coast airport isn’t the Brisbane airport… yeah. We should have figured it out... mainly my fault.

But it all worked out in the end, as Frances... Renton and Pauline’s eldest daughter lives in Surfer’s Paradise. We had all eaten dinner together after Tony’s rugby game… and we ended up crashing with Frances and Daniel for the night.

We arrived at the Gold Coast airport (an hour plus drive south of Brisbane… henceforth referred to as “Brissy”) having slept about 6 hours in the last 48, still hurting from the night before with one 50c Australian coin (and I think this was kindly donated by Kevin and Laura). The two ATMs at the airport were broken, the currency exchange had just closed, and we didn’t have Frances’ number. So we called Pauline in NZ (using our NZ sim card... it somehow worked...) to get Frances’ number, called Frances… figured out 3 of the 5 rental car agencies were out of cars… and after going to the fourth agency (Avis)… we were off. Things went a little more smoothly from there, but due to my hunger and tiredness didn’t take any pics.

Thank you Frances and Daniel for the lodging! Oh, and it turns out that Kevin and Laura were staying with Suzanne (Frances’ sister) in Auckland, and Steve and Margaret were staying at Renton and Pauline’s place in Pukekohe. I think we may owe the Browns a case of wine the next time we see them.

Oh, and this sneaky little guy snuck into your place Frances...he was in trouble, but he was pretty cute, so he got away with it... and kept on jumping on the screen door…

Surfer’s Paradise is lined with hotels, resorts, and nice beaches… and surfers. There all in one shot.

After demolishing an amazing meat pie (recommended by Daniel)…

we made it to Brissy. Promptly checked into a backpackers, returned our rental car, and went to the museum.

This is the smallest sail boat to ever go around the world… I think I prefer the Trimaran.

Brissy is located right on the river, with ferries that run all day…
